About Cliff
The author of Patents101 is Clifford D. Hyra, an intellectual property lawyer and registered United States patent attorney and the managing member of Hyra IP, PLC, an intellectual property law firm.
Cliff is a registered patent attorney with extensive experience in the field of intellectual property. He has a background in aerospace engineering and graduated magna cum laude from the George Mason University School of Law. Cliff spent several years managing a heavy patent and trademark docket at an IP boutique firm in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia, before moving on to found Hyra IP, PLC. He is licensed to practice law in Virginia and the District of Columbia and to represent clients located anywhere in the country, and overseas, before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Cliff specializes in patent and trademark prosecution (applying for and obtaining patents and trademark registrations) and has prosecuted hundreds of patent and trademark applications. He also drafts patent and trademark opinions, negotiates the settlement of patent, trademark, and copyright disputes, conducts trademark cancellation and opposition proceedings, registers copyrights, carries out appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (BPAI), Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) and Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, resolves domain name disputes, conducts patent and trademark searches, drafts intellectual property-related contracts and agreements, and more.
Cliff’s clients run the gamut from individual entrepreneurs to medium-sized entities with 100+ employees. His clients include many small businesses in the local Reston/Fairfax County/Northern Virginia area as well as businesses large and small all across the country and overseas. Cliff also serves as U.S. counsel for numerous foreign law firms and as an IP consultant for attorneys specializing in business law.
Cliff has a one-year old daughter, Cheyenne, who loves to dance. In addition to IP law, he enjoys tennis, trap-shooting, and travel.
